Usually there are two levels of cover available: Standard Critical Illness Cover (sometimes known as 'Basic Cover') and Comprehensive Critical Illness Cover.

Standard Critical Illness Cover covers illnesses that are usually terminal.

Comprehensive Critical Illness Cover includes other serious and chronic conditions that, whilst not necessarily terminal, will certainly prevent you from working normally.

It is important to note that quotations for Comprehensive Cover Critical Illness usually insure you for illnesses that prevent you from continuing your own existing occupation.

There are other three other commonly available alternative levels of occupational cover:

Firstly, cover for critical illnesses that prevent you from following any employment. Secondly, cover for critical illnesses which prevent you from following any employment to which you are suited. Both these alternatives, in effect, offer you a lower level of security in comparison with insurance which insures you for illnesses which prevent you from continuing your own existing occupation.

The final alternative is called "Work Tasks and Life tasks". Basically the insurance company lists six "work tasks" (such as walking and talking) and six "life tasks" (such as washing and feeding) and if you are unable to undertake any two tasks from the "work tasks" or any three from the "life tasks" - your illness qualifies for a claim.

These options are complicated so you will probably need to talk them through with the life insurance adviser when they call with your quotation.

The types of critical illness covered vary between insurance companies but they will typically include the following: -

  • Alzheimers disease
  • Angioplasty
  • Aorta graft surgery
  • Aplastic anaemia
  • Bacterial Meningitis
  • Benign brain tumour
  • Blindness
  • Cancer
  • Coma
  • Coronary artery by-pass surgery
  • Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
  • Deafness
  • Dementia
  • Heart attack
  • Heart valve replacement or repair
  • HIV or AIDs from an assault, blood transfusion, occupational duties or accident
  • Keyhole heart surgery
  • Kidney failure
  • Loss of independent existence
  • Loss of limbs
  • Loss of speech
  • Major organ transplant
  • Motor Neurone disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Paralysis/Paraplegia
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Stroke
  • Third degree burns
  • Total permanent disability
    Cover for children

Your chosen life insurance company will provide a full list of all the illnesses they will insure you against within their "Key Features Document". You will receive the "Key Features Document" within the Application Pack when you have decided to progress with a quotation.
